For our most recent project since it is Christmas time we have decided to "adopt a family". When you adopt a family you pretty much get a family with kids to buy Christmas gifts for that can't afford them. This year we are buying gifts for a 3 year old and an 11 year old . We made bins with each grade on the bin, so that we could get donations for general items such as sheets, paper towels, soap etc. It was made into a contest, because the grade level with the most items in their bin got points for the class cup. We ended up receiving towels, paper towels, soap, and dish soap. Next we made an amazon wish list with specific items that each girl would like. There were about 20 items on the list and all but 3 got bought. One of my group member had her mom share the amazon wishlist with her first grade class, so that helped a lot. Since all of the items were bought off of the wishlist now we have to continue the shopping at Walmart with our class. Everyone in our class made a donation to help us buy all of the items on their wishlist. Some of the items on the amazon wishlist included books, paper, drawing pens, cups, stuffed animals, blankets, and boots. A few things that we are planning on buying at Walmart include winter clothing, coats, hats, gloves, bedding, and dolls. We will go on our class shopping trip on Wednesday and wrap all of the gifts Thursday to be delivered to the Hope House on Friday!

Just recently at the Hope House we finished painting the fence. We had run out of stain, so we had to go buy more from Home Depot. There will be a before picture below to show what the fence looked like before. This took us about three trips to the Hope House to do, because the fence was a lot bigger than we had expected, so it ended up taking make time. We used about three and a half gallons of stain to finish the fence. We only had to do two sides of it because they had just replaced some of the other wood. Now we are trying to move on to our next project which is to adopt a family. We haven't gotten assigned a family yet, so this week be will probably just help out in the thrift store this week. When we are assigned a family our goal is to collect information about all of the family members and find out what they like, so we can buy items for that they will like for Christmas.
Recently at the Hope House...
Recently my group met up with the lady in charge and asked her what we could do as a project around the Hope House that would be more beneficial for the people actually living there rather than just helping out in the thrift store. She gave us a list of things that we could do, and we decided that we wanted to paint the fence around the playground to make it look nicer. This would be a good project to do before it got super cold outside. The fence was pretty big, so we recruited some of our classmates to help us out. My group went to Home Depot in Greenfield, and bought 3 gallons of stain to stain the fence rather than paint it. We brought paint bushes as well. We were able to paint about 3/4 of the fence in one class period, but we have to go back to finish it. Since we are almost finished with this project we decided it was time to be thinking about a new one, so we decided we were going to adopt a family for Christmas. This means we would buy everyone in the family special gifts with lots of meaning because they may not be able to afford many things for Christmas. We haven't got to start that project yet, but this Wednesday we will go to the Hope House to finish the fence. Most recently we have been traveling tot he hope house every Wednesday to volunteer with anything they would need help with. We got to organize clothes for the first time the other day day. We would go through huge bags of clothes and if they were worn out at all we would put them in a huge donation bin, and if not we would put them in stacks to get tagged. We have recently been going through many pallets that have been delivered as well. They get huge boxes full of over stock items that are then donated by stores to the Hope House. We have to go through all of the boxes to peel off tags and wipe off items if they are in good shape to be sold. It is tons of items in categories such as any kinds of soaps, shampoos, dish soaps, makeup, medical products and deodorants. They get thousands of items a week to sort through so they reallt look forward to our help sorting through items. Our most recent project that we have decided on is to paint the playground fro the kids. Instead of painting it a color to start off we are going to stain the wood of the fence around the playground and the playground itself. Katie and I measured the fence to get an idea of how much stain we would need, so that we can go pick some up at Home Depot next Wednesday! We are also hoping to get some help from some classmates so that we can paint the fence in one day. We have had a lot of fun helping out and we can't wait to get started on the next project!
Our project on the Hope House is thoroughly to help those in need. We can do anything from help in the homeless shelter to simply help[ing fold clothes in the thrift store. We chose this as our project, because we thought that it would really help us build relationships with people. It really helps you feel like a better person when you are able to build connections and help in any way you can. Everyone in my group really enjoys building relationships with people so we really hope to do so with the other volunteers and even the people and kids living there. Our project takes place at the Hope House every Wednesday, and they will have a new project for us to do every time we come in. First we will be starting in the thrift store helping to organize, sort, hang up, and tag clothes. Pitch day... We had a project pitch day where we had to create a presentation including goals, logistics, events, etc. We included our goal which I mentioned before, our plan on when we would go volunteer, which is every Wednesday. The administrators came and viewed our projects, and gave us feedback on what we should do differently. We didn't get too much feedback, which was a good thing. The only thing that we needed to think about was how we are going to get the money for pain or for flowers if we wanted to do outside work. Our teacher mentioned that he would help us apply for grants. Initial thoughts... My initial thoughts when it came to this project was how much work are they actually going to let us do, but we had conversations with the other volunteers and decided that it was really going to work out. When we first got to the Hope House they gave us a small tour, so we could see around. I could tell it was going to be a great place to help out, because everyone there seemed like a great person. |
